ABS — the powerhouse of thermoforming

ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) combines three monomers into a material with unique properties: Acrylonitrile provides chemical resistance, Butadiene delivers outstanding impact resistance and Styrene ensures rigidity and excellent processability. The result: the toughest thermoforming material on the market.

Why Universal-Polythex: As a leading supplier of thermoforming-optimized ABS sheets, Universal-Polythex convinces with consistent quality, excellent deep-drawing behaviour and a homogeneous surface. For our customers, this means: reproducible results, batch after batch.

Applications: ABS trays are used wherever maximum load-bearing capacity is required — Automotive (body, transmission, interior trays), Mechanical engineering (heavy-duty workpiece carriers), Electronics (robust housings and trays) and Returnable logistics (hundreds of cycles in the supply chain).

Processing at Scafa: ABS requires higher forming temperatures (140–180°C) than PET or PS. Our thermoforming expertise in Sundern guarantees precise contours even with thick materials up to 6 mm. Thanks to our in-house tooling, we respond flexibly to your individual requirements.

Impact-Resistant

Highest impact resistance of all thermoforming plastics — ideal for heavy components and harsh industrial environments.

Chemical-Resistant

Resistant to oils, alkalis and greases — reliable in the harshest production environments.

Reusable

Hundreds of cycles in the supply chain — economical and sustainable for industrial returnable systems.

When is ABS the right choice?

ABS is the material of choice when your packaging needs to withstand maximum mechanical stress, chemical exposure and hundreds of cycles:

  • Heavy components — transmissions, engine parts, tools
  • Harsh industrial environments — oils, alkalis, chemicals
  • Returnable trays — hundreds of cycles in the supply chain
  • Automotive logistics — body, interior
  • Maximum mechanical load — heavy-duty workpiece carriers

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose ABS over PS for industrial trays?
ABS offers significantly higher impact resistance than PS and is resistant to oils, alkalis and many chemicals. For heavy components and harsh environments, ABS is the only safe choice.
Is ABS recyclable?
ABS is recyclable as a single-grade material. In practice, ABS is reused hundreds of times in industrial returnable systems before being sent for recycling.
What wall thicknesses do you process for ABS?
We process ABS sheets from 1.0 mm to 6.0 mm — ideal for thin-walled inserts through to heavy-duty workpiece carriers.
Who supplies your ABS sheets?
We source our ABS sheets from Universal-Polythex — a leading manufacturer of thermoforming-optimized ABS semi-finished products.
Can ABS trays also be ESD-protected?
Yes. ABS is also available in conductive and dissipative variants. For ESD protection in electronics manufacturing, we offer ABS trays with defined surface resistance according to DIN EN 61340.
