A-PET / R-PET —
food-grade & sustainable
for thermoforming

PET is the most versatile plastic in thermoforming — crystal clear, food-grade and fully recyclable. With ABA coextrusion by Klöckner Pentaplast (kp), we rely on R-PET with 80 % recyclate content. Manufactured in Sundern (Sauerland).

PET — the standard for transparent packaging

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is the material for transparent, thermoformed packaging. Crystal clear, dimensionally stable and with an excellent barrier against moisture and gases, PET excels across the board. With a density of 1.33 g/cm³ and a forming temperature of 120–160 °C, PET offers optimal processing properties in the thermoforming process.

R-PET & ABA technology by Klöckner Pentaplast: ABA coextrusion enables a 3-layer structure in a 10/80/10 ratio — 10 % virgin PET outer layers for safe food contact compliance, 80 % recycled PET in the core for maximum sustainability. This technology reduces CO² emissions by up to 60 % compared to pure virgin PET.

Applications: Food packaging (EU 10/2011 compliant), medical packaging, POS display packaging such as clamshells and clamshell blisters, as well as industrial trays. PET is the all-rounder among thermoforming materials — and with R-PET, also the sustainable choice.

Processing at Scafa: We process PET and R-PET sheets from Klöckner Pentaplast (kp) on modern thermoforming machines. Our in-house toolmaking in Sundern guarantees short lead times and highest precision — even for complex geometries.

Food-Grade

EU 10/2011, food-contact compliant, migration tests passed — safe for direct contact with food.

ABA Technology

10/80/10 layering — 80 % recyclate in the core, virgin outer layers for food contact. By Klöckner Pentaplast (kp).

Crystal Clear

Highest transparency for optimal product visibility — ideal for display packaging at the point of sale.

ABA Coextrusion — 3-Layer Technology

ABA coextrusion by Klöckner Pentaplast (kp) combines food safety and sustainability in a single film.

Single Layer — 100% Virgin Material Amorphous PET, crystal clear, dimensionally stable
100%

Highest clarity and mechanical strength — the classic choice for transparent blister packaging and trays.

A-PET virgin (outer) 10%
R-PET Recyclate (core) 80%
A-PET virgin (outer) 10%

Virgin outer layers ensure food contact safety — recycled core saves up to 60% CO².

When is PET the right choice?

Food Packaging

Chocolates, baked goods, delicatessen — PET protects aromas and complies with EU 10/2011.

Medical Packaging

Protective packaging for sterile medical products — highest purity and safety.

POS Display Packaging

Clamshell blisters, clamshells — crystal clear product presentation at the point of sale.

Transport Trays & Disposable Trays

Lightweight, dimensionally stable trays for the safe transport of sensitive products.

Sustainability Required

R-PET as an alternative — 80 % recyclate, 60 % less CO², closed-loop cycle.

Maximum Transparency

Product presentation at the highest level — PET offers the best optical clarity of all thermoforming materials.

Frequently Asked Questions about PET

What is the difference between PET and R-PET?

PET (virgin) is manufactured from virgin material. R-PET (recycled) contains recycled polyethylene terephthalate. In the ABA coextrusion by Klöckner Pentaplast, the core consists of 80 % recyclate, surrounded by 10 % virgin outer layers for safe food contact.

Is R-PET food-grade?

Yes. The ABA technology ensures that only the virgin outer layers come into contact with the food. R-PET with ABA layering complies with EU Regulation 10/2011 and food contact requirements.

How sustainable is R-PET?

R-PET with 80 % recyclate content saves up to 60 % CO² compared to virgin PET. It is also fully recyclable within the PET cycle — a closed-loop material system.

What film thicknesses do you process?

We process PET and R-PET films in thicknesses from 0.2 mm to 2.0 mm — depending on the application and protection requirements.

Who supplies your PET films?

We source our PET and R-PET films from Klöckner Pentaplast (kp) — a leading European film manufacturer with the highest quality standards.
