PS & HIPS —
precise contours
for automation

Polystyrene (PS) and High Impact PS (HIPS) from Fernholz offer the sharpest contours in thermoforming — ideal for robotic grippers, pick-and-place systems and stacking trays. Processed in Sundern (Sauerland), Germany.

PS & HIPS — Precision on point

PS (polystyrene) is rigid, dimensionally stable and offers excellent detail reproduction in the thermoforming process. When contour accuracy matters, PS is the material of choice — robotic grippers require exact pick-up points, and PS delivers precisely that.

HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) is impact-modified PS with a rubber component. This makes HIPS significantly more resistant than standard PS while retaining good contour definition. Ideal for trays that need to withstand rough handling.

Fernholz supplies PS/HIPS sheets optimised for thermoforming — uniform thickness, homogeneous surface. Density 1.05 g/cm³, forming temperature 130–150 °C.

At Scafa in Sundern, we use PS/HIPS for stacking trays, automation inserts, sorting trays and flocked inlays — as a carrier material for Krekelberg flocking.

Contour Precision

Finest details for robotic grippers — PS delivers the sharpest contours of all thermoforming materials with tolerances in the tenth-of-a-millimetre range.

Stacking Accuracy

Reproducible stacking nubs and registration lugs — for trouble-free automated loading and transport.

Base for Flocking

PS as carrier material for Krekelberg velvet surface — scratch-resistant protection for watches, jewellery and optical products.

When is PS/HIPS the right choice?

PS and HIPS are your materials when contour precision, stacking accuracy and cost-effective series production need to come together. Here are the typical applications:

Robotic Loading Lines (Pick-and-Place)

Exact pick-up points for robotic grippers — reproducible in high-volume production.

Stacking Trays with Reproducible Geometry

Stacking nubs and registration lugs for trouble-free automated transport.

Sorting Inserts for Small Parts

Fine contours for precise compartmentalisation — every part in its defined position.

Base for Flocked Inlays (Krekelberg)

PS moulded parts with velvet surface — for scratch-sensitive watches, jewellery and optical products.

Cost-Effective Series Production

PS/HIPS is economical at high volumes — without compromising on quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between PS and HIPS?
PS (polystyrene) is rigid and delivers maximum contour precision but is more brittle. HIPS (High Impact PS) contains a rubber component for higher impact resistance — with slightly reduced detail sharpness.
Why use PS for automation trays?
PS offers the sharpest contours of all thermoforming plastics. Robotic grippers require exact pick-up points — PS delivers reproducible geometries with tolerances in the tenth-of-a-millimetre range.
Can PS be flocked?
Yes. PS is the ideal carrier material for flocking. In cooperation with Krekelberg Flock Products, we apply a velvet surface to PS moulded parts — for scratch-sensitive watches, jewellery and optical products.
Is PS food-safe?
PS can be produced in food-safe grades and then complies with EU Regulation 10/2011. For direct food contact, however, we primarily recommend PET, as it is more transparent and offers superior barrier properties.
Who supplies your PS films?
We source our PS and HIPS sheets from Fernholz — a specialist in thermoforming-optimised polystyrene semi-finished products with consistently high quality.
